Community Projects

Community Team

Swale Community Leisure has a developed community team, who work with a wide range of partners to engage and positively impact individuals throughout the Borough of Swale and surrounding areas.

The community team is multi-disciplinary and regularly deliver outreach activities in community locations that target hard to reach communities. The team also work with local communtity groups and organisations to provide opportunities and develop projects which allow those who may find it difficult to access their local leisure facilities and services, to do just that.

The community operation has also entended to run additional community facilities in Kent.

The team is very proud of the impact they have made within the local community and are always looking for more opportunities to expand this work and reach a wider range of our local communities.

Swale Community Leisure have been working in partnership with the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust for 8 years. During this time, we have worked with a number of world class athletes to help over a 1,000 Young People who were not in Education, Empolyment or Training. Working together on a variety of programmes to support personal, social and emotional development; these Young People have improved their employability skills, metal wellbeing and physical activity levels.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, 8 programmes were delivered via Zoom, all over the country. Running these programmes was absolutely vital during such a difficult time. These programmes allowed them to continue to build their skills and confidence, whilst socialising with peers and enagaging in activities and games.

Starting Blocks Challenge - A Starting Block is the person, place or moment that inspired you to become the person you are today.

Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and Swale Community Leisure launch their new partnership, which will include fundraising challenges for both staff, members & leisure centre users to take part in.

Celebrate your unique and individual ‘Starting Block’ in life and raise money to help the Trust support young people facing disadvantage and challenges in their everyday lives.

Not everybody has the opportunity or inspiration to find their Starting Block. The Trust offers these opportunities through transformational programmes designed to improve health and wellbeing and equip young people with the positive behaviours and mindset they need to tackle the challenges they face in their everyday lives. Programmes are delivered by world-class athletes, trained by the Trust as coaches and mentors. It’s a powerful formula.

Schools

SCL work with a number of local schools on a number of projects at our leisure centres.

  • Borden Grammar School utilise Swallows Leisure Centre for gym sessions, Badminton and sports hall use.

  • Meadowfields School visit the Active Zone at Swallows Leisure Centre weekly. This started as a pilot project, but was enjoyed so much it will be a weekly session across the 2022/2023 school year.

"The children at Meadowfield have really enjoyed attending sessions and we have noticed that the children are calm and much more focused in school. The children are really benefiting from attending the Active Zone and we have seen some wonderful changes in the behaviour and social interactions during that time. All classes are so excited about attending every week. Thank you for supporting the development of this experience for the children and making the facility available."

  • Hosting Primary School Swimming Galas and School Games events and activities.

We have worked closely with Optivo for the last five years, supporting their residents through community activity days, offering free sports activities and information about the leisure centres.

Recently we have welcomed two groups into the centres for residents to increase their exercise and reintergrate into the local community after the centres have reopened after post-pandemic closures.

One group utilise the Shapemaster Studio at Sheppey Leisure Complex to meet likeminded individuals and improve their health in a social environment. The other take part in a low-impact, introductory exercise class at Swallows Leisure Centre.
